What is FDA Approved Food?
Wondering why some things are FDA approved and some are not? It is hard to say that one is better than the other the FDA does not “approve” everything you see in the supermarket.
The FDA is responsible for approving food additives for people and dogs, additives, and certain drugs. So when you see FDA approved it may be referring to the additives and not the food itself. So you would not see FDA approved on any whole foods and that is always the better choice!
what does the FDA not regulate?
Another important thing to remember is that the FDA does not approve the food labels including the nutritional facts. They only require the nutritional information to be on the packaging. So only buy trusted brands as there is not a regulation on what is printed for content.
FDA approved dietary supplements
Lastly, be careful of supplements as the safety and effectiveness are not regulated by the FDA. The only requirement is that if the company producing the supplement is using a new dietary ingredient, (defined as not marketed in the US before Oct.15th 1994) the FDA requires notification 75 days before marketing. This notification must include the basis for concluding that it will be reasonably expected to be safe.
But we cannot be too careful with FDA approved either! There were 36,450 deaths in a year due to FDA approved prescription drug overdoses in 2008, while non-approved supplements have been reported as only causing a single death.
But in the end, the best things you can be buying at the supermarkets are whole, unprocessed foods that do not contain the additives and preservatives.
This includes supplements! Be sure to know where the food, additives, and supplements are coming from and whether it is approved or not it could be right for you!
