With all the talk of not combining fruits and vegetables in a meal, do you know what the difference is? That is a great question for this time of the year in the Mid-West. Hence the summer, we are at our peak for seeing these on shelves and at farmers markets, it is good to know what you are eating and what to do with it.

Let’s start with vegetables. Vegetable by definition is “the edible parts of a plant.” This is going to include your carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, pea pods, green beans, etc.. They are commonly eaten in recipes or as side dishes. Most common varieties can be grown in any climate throughout the year. Furthermore, some great ways to incorporate vegetables into your meals is replacing cauliflower for potatoes, shredding carrots into sauces and bread. Also as eye appealing side dishes!

As for fruit, by definition fruits are ripened ovaries of flowering plants. The easiest way to identify a fruit is that it is the fleshy part of the plant that surrounds the seeds. We are all aware of common varieties of fruits, the obvious of apples, oranges, pears, cherries, kiwis, tangerines, etc…. But may not be aware of the fruits culinarily known as vegetables. Tomatoes are the most common fruit considered a vegetable, but there are many others! Cucumbers, squash, all varieties of peppers, eggplant, and zucchini! So those that love fruit but hate veggies, a whole new list of great things can be added to your plate!
